Case Study: Ōtorohanga District Council

Ōtorohanga District Council engaged me to facilitate the workshops and stakeholder discussions in the development of its Tourism Marketing Playbook, designed to clarify the district’s positioning, narrative and practical support needed to grow tourism sustainably.

I designed and led three stakeholder workshops — with iwi, industry and wider businesses in Ōtorohanga and Kāwhia. The process began by building a shared understanding of the tourism system: global and national trends, local expenditure data, visitor motivations and the district’s current performance. From there, I facilitated structured conversations to define the district’s desired future (Ōtorohanga 2035), ideal visitor profile and unique positioning.

The outcome was more than a marketing document. It strengthened council-industry alignment, clarified the district’s tourism story and identified priority tools and resources to support business capability while ensuring growth reflected community values.

Client Testimonial

“Kiri’s facilitation of our industry and community workshops was outstanding. She brought a deep, strategic and practical understanding of the tourism sector and, just as importantly, created an environment where people felt confident to learn, contribute, and ask questions. The discussions she guided were thoughtful, inclusive, and highly productive, drawing out critical insights from a wide range of participants.

The outputs from these sessions became the foundation of the priorities and narratives in the Tourism Marketing Playbook — helping to turn aspirations, ideas, and perspectives into clear, actionable direction.”
