Case Study: Regional Tourism New Zealand – Te Ūnga Mai capability programme
Over three-years I led the Te Ūnga Mai programme, which empowered every Regional Tourism Organisation in New Zealand to lead destination management and stewardship in their regions.
Through a blend of residentials, online workshops, coaching sessions, and peer learning communities, the programme equipped RTOs with the practical tools, confidence, and collaborative frameworks needed to drive a future-focused approach. As a result, it significantly strengthened regional leadership and aligned efforts across the country, accelerating New Zealand’s shift towards a coordinated, sustainable destination management model.
The programme’s outstanding success was recognised with a New Zealand Tourism Award in 2022 for excellence in industry collaboration. I’ve since shared the story internationally, speaking at global events to highlight how this model can inspire similar initiatives worldwide.
